From Chains to Channels: How African Football Must Lead the Fight for Human Dignity

Today, African Coaches Connect, (ACC) stands with the world in solemn remembrance. On this 23rd of August, we do not just observe history. We feel it. In our bones. In our fields. In the feet of every African boy and girl who kicks a ball barefoot on dusty community pitches dreaming of more. The transatlantic slave trade was not just the theft of bodies. It was the theft of talent, of agency, of dignity. Over 12 million Africans were torn from their villages, their names erased, their futures commodified. Those who survived did so because they resisted. With courage. With culture. With community. That same spirit of resistance is what we now call upon in football.
REMEMBER: OUR ROOTS IN RESISTANCE For African Football professionals, stakeholders, enthusiast, fans, and all, remembrance is not ritual. It is responsibility. The same ports that once shipped our ancestors in chains — Goree, Badagry, Elmina — now watch our young players board planes chasing contracts. The journey has changed, but the question remains: Are we moving as free people, or are we still being traded? Our ancestors fought for freedom with machetes and mutiny. Today, we fight for it with structure, education, and systems that protect our own. > “You cannot develop football if you do not first develop the person kicking the ball.”
REFLECT: THE MODERN SHACKLES IN FOOTBALL The chains are different now, but they still bind if we are not careful: Talent Trafficking: Unlicensed agents promising Europe, abandoning players in transit countries. Contract Bondage: Young players signing away their image rights, wages, and futures before age 18. Systemic Neglect: No insurance, no education, no post-career plan. A player used, then discarded. Dignity Deficit: African players celebrated for goals abroad, but undervalued and underpaid at home. This is not development. This is extraction. And ACC rejects it. Our tradition as Africans is Ubuntu — “I am because we are.” Our custom is to raise the child of the village. Our coaching philosophy must reflect this: protect first, then produce. RESIST INJUSTICE: BUILDING A FAIRER FUTURE On this day, ACC commits again to our founding creed: “Developing people through football, and developing football through people.”
This is how we resist: A. DIGNITY THROUGH STRUCTURE Mandatory player welfare protocols in every academy and club across Africa. Medical care, education, and psychological support are not extras. They are rights.
B. EQUALITY THROUGH OPPORTUNITY A Pan-African scouting and coaching database to ensure a boy in Jalingo and a girl in Johannesburg have the same visibility.
C. JUSTICE THROUGH GOVERNANCE Transparent contracts, licensed agents, and accountability for clubs that exploit. No more silent transfers. No more ghost academies.
D. FREEDOM THROUGH HOME-BASED GROWTH Invest in our African natives, our local leagues, our football professionals, educate our stakeholders, enthusiants and fans. So that migration is a choice, not a desperation. The abolitionists of 1807 did not wait for permission. They organized, educated, and legislated freedom. As African football professionals, we must do the same for our game.
COMMITTEE CHARGE To every player, coach, football agent and lawyer, technical director, football administrator, journalist, fans and all in the ACC network: Let our training sessions / advocacy also teach self-worth. Let our team talks / voice also teach history. Let our contracts also protect futures. Let our football also liberate. Because football without dignity is just entertainment. Football with dignity is nation-building.

May remembrance inspire us to build a future where freedom, dignity, equality and opportunity belong to everyone. We remember. We reflect. We must do better.”
